Lately, I’ve been receiving a lot of questions about places to visit and the best time to do so. There have also been a number of questions about staying active during the winter, and whether running/trekking in the rains is safe, etc. I thought I would try to cover both within one post. Starting with monsoon, which is the current season.
Activities: The monsoon is the best time to explore a number of indoor activities like at the gym, or a yoga class, dance, etc. It also calls for indulging in a good amount of cooking, playing a musical instrument and reading. If you do want to explore outside cycling is an excellent option in the cloudy weather, or if you’re like me, you could run too. Just make sure you have great shoes, and exercise enough precaution.
Places to Visit: It’s a good time to enjoy the views at a hilly place like Himachal, Leh Ladakh, Uttrakhand, etc. Or if you’re like me, you would go for a beach trek at Gokarna or a magical experience at Kerala (especially the coastal part).
Activities: Ah! This is the time when it gets more difficult to get out of bed. If you live in a place that has snow you have a number of options like ice skating, sledding, etc. But otherwise it’s the best time to go for a winter trek, or any weekend trek to make up for all the lying around during the week. However, if you’re the kind that doesn’t need extra motivation, great going!
Places to Visit: Winters are the best time to visit almost any place (except the ones that might be closed dues to freezing temperatures), but yeah, you can go to a desert like in Rajasthan or Gujarat, or visit some pristine beaches at the Andamans, Goa or almost any coastal area. It’s also a good time to visit other monuments like Sanchi Stupa, or the temples at Khajuraho or Hampi, even for a place like Mysore, Pondicherry, Rameshwaram and Kanyakumari.
Activities: This is the best time for some gardening, also not a bad time for a cycle/bike ride. Spring is another good time for a hike. Given all the fun colors outside you could go on a photography tour or do something on a lighter note like flying a kite.
Places to Visit: You could still visit the places you missed during the winters just to avoid the crowds and reduce your expenses. Nevertheless, it’s a great time to visit a place where there is snow like Sikkim. Even a tour to the seven sisters in the North East would be considerable.
Activities: This is when you can make the best out of your morning workouts, especially running, you would sweat a lot but that means its working. You can easily burn all the extra layers of fat in your body and maintain later. Swimming is another great workout for the summers. If you don’t have the time for either of the two even walking would help. This is the best time to kick in some cardio.
Places to Visit: It’s again a good time to visit the hilly and cold areas just to enjoy a different view and escape the summer heat. So Srinagar, Ooty, Mussoorie, Dharamshala, Nainital are some of the many options. Either that or stay home to avoid getting roasted.
